Big changes expected at Pimlico Race Course
The Maryland Jockey Club's Acting President and General Manager, Mike Rogers, has announced significant changes to operations at Pimlico Race Course, aimed at revitalising and securing the future of Thoroughbred racing in Maryland.
Effective July 1, 2024, ownership of Pimlico Race Course will be transferred from The Stronach Group to the state of Maryland through the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (MTROA).
Starting September 1, 2024, all racing, training, and wagering operations at Pimlico Race Course will cease. This includes both customer-facing activities and operations in the backstretch.
A $10 million investment through the Department of Housing and Community Development will be made to enhance housing, employment training, and workforce development in the Park Heights community, where Pimlico Race Course is located.
Fall 2024: Maryland Stadium Authority is expected to commence site work and demolition.
January 1, 2025: Day-to-day racing and training operations at both Pimlico and Laurel Park will be transferred from The Stronach Group to the state of Maryland/MTROA.
May 17, 2025: Preakness 150 will be celebrated at Pimlico Race Course as planned.
Efforts will be made to ensure a smooth transition for personnel, including coordinating stall allocations at Laurel Park and dormitory room allocations through respective contacts.
Throughout the transition, maintaining high standards of operation, horse care, and safety at all facilities remains a priority.
This transition marks a pivotal moment in the history of Pimlico Race Course, securing its role as the primary hub for year-round Thoroughbred racing in Maryland and ensuring the continuation of the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.
