The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame (CHRHF) has announced updates to its committees as it prepares for the 2025 nomination and election cycle. Among these updates, Fred Gillis joins the Standardbred Nomination Committee, succeeding the late Kent Oakes, while Richard Veilleux steps into the Standardbred Election Committee, replacing his father, Alain Veilleux.
The Thoroughbred Committee has also seen changes. R. Glenn Sikura, inducted as a Thoroughbred Builder in 2023, is now Chair of the Thoroughbred Nomination Committee, taking over from Sue Leslie, who remains on the committee. Robert Landry, a 2014 Jockey Inductee, fills the position vacated by Tom Cosgrove. Additionally, Catherine Day-Phillips assumes the role of Thoroughbred Election Committee Chair, with Jim Bannon continuing as a voter. The Election Committee gains new members: Vicki Pappas, a 2021 Builder Inductee, and Dan Vella, a renowned trainer.
The CHRHF, supported largely by volunteers, thanked outgoing committee members for their service.
For the Class of 2025, the public is encouraged to nominate individuals and horses who have made significant contributions to Canadian Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing. Nominations are open across categories such as Trainers, Drivers, Jockeys, Communicators, and Builders, as well as categories for notable horses. The deadline for nominations is March 7, 2025.
Founded in 1976, the CHRHF aims to honour the sport’s heritage in Canada, celebrating excellence and preserving a legacy spanning over 250 years.
