Churchill Welcomes Baffert Back as He Secures Victory with Barnes
At Churchill Downs, Bob Baffert marked his return after a prolonged absence of over three years when he congratulated company CEO Bill Carstanjen following a narrow victory by the colt Barnes in his debut. The $3.2 million horse, named after Baffert's assistant, faced a challenging race but ultimately edged out Innovator in a thrilling finish.
Baffert recounted a conversation with jockey Martín García, who acknowledged the pressure he felt racing down the stretch with such high expectations. This race was significant for Baffert, as a test of his new horse and a reentry into a venue from which he had been suspended following a controversial drug test involving Medina Spirit, the 2021 Kentucky Derby winner.
Despite initial concerns about the race distance of 5 1/2 furlongs, Baffert noted that Barnes showed promise and indicated a preference for longer races in the future. When asked about his plans, Baffert hinted at possible Derby preparations away from Southern California, showcasing his adaptability with his horses.
The naming of Barnes unfolded amusingly, with Baffert surprising his assistant Jimmy Barnes by presenting a halter bearing the horse's name. The post-race handshake with Carstanjen was brief yet meaningful, signalling a reconciliation. With a nostalgic nod to past races and hopes for the upcoming Derby, Baffert expressed his satisfaction with the day, highlighting the importance of returning to Churchill Downs.
