Civaci Secures First Riding Title, Casse Leads Trainers

Sahin Civaci, originally from British Columbia, achieved his first Woodbine riding title following the 2024 racing season. Civaci led the jockey standings with 170 victories, surpassing former champion Rafael Hernandez by 30 wins. Fraser Aebly, an apprentice rider, secured third place with 73 wins. Civaci’s season included 17 stakes victories, just one short of Hall of Famer Patrick Husbands.

Civaci’s journey to the top began in Ankara, Turkey, where he trained as a jockey under the Turkish Jockey Club. Returning to Canada in 2014, he quickly adapted to the racing scene, initially finding success at Hastings Racecourse. A move to Woodbine in 2019 brought him greater opportunities, supported by trainers like Phil Gracey and Martin Drexler.

Though Civaci’s quiet demeanour initially posed challenges in self-promotion, he eventually found his stride with the help of agent Leroy Trotman, who introduced him to top barns, including Mark Casse’s. In 2024, with Kazushi Kimura competing in California, Civaci capitalised on his opportunity, achieving a 26% win rate and placing 16th in North America by total wins.

Meanwhile, Mark Casse claimed his 16th trainer’s title at Woodbine with 108 wins, setting a record of 33 stakes victories and earning $7.3 million in purses. Martin Drexler and Kevin Attard followed closely in the standings. Owner Bruno Schickedanz led all categories with 65 wins and $1.9 million in earnings.

Civaci’s rising reputation and bold riding style could lead him to new heights, with plans to compete in New York this winter.
