Cold Weather Halts Turfway Park Races

Turfway Park has canceled its live racing events. We scheduled the events for Friday and Saturday. This was due to extreme cold weather conditions. A track spokesperson, Kevin Kerstein, announced the decision to call off these races through a social media post. The park plans to proceed with its Wednesday and Thursday race cards. The first posts are at 5:55 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

The Leonatus Stakes is a $125,000 race for 3-year-olds. It was set for Saturday night. But, they have postponed and rescheduled it for February 2. The race is a mile-long event. It serves as a preparatory step for Kentucky Derby points preps. Eleven horses entered. The Turfway Prevue Stakes anticipated Vote No, the horse that won on January 6, to be a notable contender.

Churchill Downs Inc. owns and operates Turfway Park. The owner has indicated that the races planned for the canceled days will be redrawn. The schedules of upcoming entry days will also include them.

This cancellation at Turfway Park is part of a broader trend. It is affecting race tracks across the eastern two-thirds of the United States. This week, the severe cold weather canceled a total of 14 race cards. The cancellations involved Thoroughbreds and quarter horses at eight tracks, according to Equibase.

For more details on the cancellations and the revised racing schedule at Turfway Park, look for further information in their entries and results postings.
