Custard Dolce Claims Fifth Consecutive Victory in Alberta

Custard Dolce (by Custard The Dragon) secured her fifth consecutive stakes victory in the Alberta Sires Stakes Starburst for two-year-old pacing fillies at The Track on 2 on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Guided by Jamie Gray, the filly took the lead for the first time in her career and dominated the field through fractions of :28.4, :59.2, and 1:29.2. She surged off the final turn, pulling away to a commanding seven-and-a-quarter-length win, stopping the clock at 1:56.4. Dragons Attitude (Serge Masse) finished second from the pocket, with Utherockinmyroll (Nathan Sobey) taking third.

Unbeaten in five starts, Custard Dolce has previously claimed victories in the Emerald Filly Pace, Alberta Sires Stakes Starlet, and ASHA Filly Pace. Trained by Gray, who co-owns the homebred filly with Jackson Wittup, Max Gibb, and Derek Wilson, she has earned $73,387 from five wins in six starts.

In the first division, Mademechangemymind (by Winds Of Change, driven by Sobey) showed resilience by recovering from an early break to secure the win. After her early misstep, she rallied from fifth, went three-wide at the top of the stretch, and powered home to win by a length-and-a-quarter in 1:56.4. Hot Shot Shark (Logan Gillis) finished second, just ahead of Blowing In The Wind (Kelly Hoerdt).

Mademechangemymind, trained and owned by Sobey, now boasts three wins in five starts with earnings of $43,033. She won her Alberta Sires Stakes Starlet on debut and her ASHA Filly Pace elimination before finishing runner-up to Custard Dolce in the final.

In the second division, Kid Winter (by Up The Credit, driven by Phil Price) used a second-quarter move to take control and held off all challengers to win by a quarter-length in 1:57.3. Despite some difficulty in deep stretch, she kept Imashipwreck (Phil Giesbrecht) at bay. Ahoof Ahead (Scott Knight) completed the top three.

Unbeaten in two career starts, Kid Winter is trained by Price, who co-owns the filly with Orianna Scheck. She has earned $11,750 in her young career.

The card also featured two divisions of the Alberta Sires Stakes Lone Star for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. In the first division, Outlawminutbyminut (by Smart Shark, driven by Logan Gillis) popped the pocket on the final turn and outdueled favourite Discontinued (Mike Hennessy) in the closing strides to win in a new career-best 1:55.2. G Ts Captain Solo (Serge Masse) was third, several lengths back.

Outlawminutbyminut is on a three-race win streak, having won the Century Casinos Pace last out. Trained and co-owned by Gillis along with Todd Teolis, the gelding has earned $55,450 in five starts.

In the final division, Momas Work Of Art (by Outrageous Art, driven by Serge Masse) benefited from a perfect pocket trip and exploded down the stretch to win by two-and-a-half lengths in 1:55.2, setting a new lifetime mark. G Ts Jukebox Jack (Hennessy) finished second, while Westcoast Mccoy (Phil Giesbrecht) closed in for third.

Momas Work Of Art, who previously won the Alberta Sires Stakes Rising Star, now has three career wins and earnings of $52,400. Shelly Arsenault trains the colt, co-owned by Don M Jr. Stables and Jackson Wittup.

The final Alberta Sires Stakes events for two-year-olds are scheduled for Oct. 19 at Century Mile. The Track On 2 will conclude its season on Sunday, Sept. 15, with a nine-race card starting at 1:10 p.m. MDT.
