Equestrian Veteran Philip Oliver, 53, Passes Away

A memorial service is scheduled in Kentucky for the native of England.

Philip Oliver, a revered figure in the horse racing world, is set to be honoured in a memorial service this April in Kentucky. The British-born trainer, who was wedded to fellow trainer Vicki Oliver, passed away on February 19, 2024, in Indiantown, Florida. Born on June 6, 1970, in Chipping Norton, England, Philip was the son of Alison and Alan Oliver.

Growing up in Chipping Norton, Philip embarked on his equestrian journey at the tender age of 3. His foray into the world of horse racing began early on, working alongside esteemed jump jockeys and trainers such as Stan Miller and Lester Piggott. At 18, Philip ventured to the United States, kickstarting his American career as an assistant under Ian Jory at Santa Anita Park. His expertise played a pivotal role in the success of horses like Video Ranger and Best Pal.

Transitioning to roles with renowned trainers like Bruce Headley and Elliott Walden, Philip contributed significantly to the careers of champion racehorses like Bertrando, Menifee, Victory Gallop, and Distorted Humor. It was during his tenure with Walden that he crossed paths with his future wife, Vicki.

In 1999, Philip made his mark as a trainer, carving out a distinguished career that boasted Grade 1 victories and numerous graded stakes wins. Notable horses under his tutelage included Autonomy, Closing Range, First Lieutenant, Last Full Measure, and Middie. Beyond his equestrian pursuits, Philip was an avid reader with a deep passion for hunting and his canine companions.

Remembered for his warmth, humour, and affable nature, Philip touched the lives of many with his infectious personality. His untimely passing has left a profound void in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Philip is survived by his wife, Victoria Oliver, his brother Chris Oliver, his sister Toni Blinkhorn, and his mother Alison Oliver, while he was preceded in death by his father, Alan Oliver.
