Equibase and Stable Analytics Partner on Wearable Tech for Racehorses

Equibase and Stable Analytics have announced a partnership to advance equine welfare using cutting-edge wearable technology. The collaboration centres on Stable Analytics' biometric sensor, Equigraph, which tracks racehorse health and performance. 

The initiative includes participation in the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ research study on detecting musculoskeletal injuries in Thoroughbreds. Both companies will advance to the next phase of the study, which involves monitoring several hundred 2-year-old Thoroughbreds throughout 2025 using Equigraph sensors. 

Equibase President and COO Kyle McDoniel emphasised the importance of collecting robust data during high-speed workouts and races, stating that this partnership supports ongoing efforts to improve equine safety. The collected data will complement existing stride analysis information gathered through GPS systems from Total Performance Data and Gmax. 

Stable Analytics, founded by experts with backgrounds at NASA and SpaceX, developed the Equigraph system, featuring a wireless biometric sensor mounted on the horse’s girth. The sensor transmits data via a smartphone app and uploads it to the cloud for analysis. CEO Ben Bernhard highlighted the potential of advanced algorithms to detect subtle, invisible movements, noting that Equibase’s involvement will facilitate large-scale implementation of this technology. 

Over 150 yearlings, including horses from 2024 Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Kenny McPeek, have been enrolled in the study. McPeek expressed enthusiasm for combining traditional horsemanship with sensor data to enhance safety in the sport, marking a step toward modernising Thoroughbred racing with innovative, data-driven solutions.
