Fever Casts Doubt on Nobals’ Hong Kong Sprint Participation

Nobals, aiming to become the first U.S.-trained contender in the Hong Kong International Races since 2017, has encountered a setback due to a fever following his arrival in Hong Kong. The gelding, trained by Larry Rivelli and scheduled to race in the Hong Kong Sprint on December 8, is under veterinary observation and has been barred from training. 

According to Marc Van Gestel, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's chief stipendiary steward, Nobals showed signs of infection and fever upon arrival on December 1. Veterinary advice has recommended withholding the horse from exercise on the training track until further clearance is granted. The HKJC will provide updates on his condition as necessary. 

Rivelli had chosen the Hong Kong Sprint for Nobals after his impressive victory in the Kennedy Road Stakes on November 16 at Woodbine, where he outdueled Canadian sprint star Patches O’Houlihan in a thrilling finish. The 5-year-old son of Noble Mission has an impressive record of 11 wins from 22 starts, including a Grade 1 triumph in the 2023 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park. That race saw him narrowly hold off Big Mission, solidifying his reputation as a top sprinter. 

Bred by Dr. John Candler and owned by Patricia’s Hope, Nobals boasts career earnings of over $1.6 million. However, his participation in the Hong Kong Sprint remains uncertain as his team awaits updates on his recovery.
