Following a test run, Britain Scraps Sunday Evening Racing

This year's trial period of Sunday evening racing resulted in unfavourable comments from participants and insufficient betting interest, hence Sunday evening racing will not be introduced in Britain.

The BHA acknowledged that the trial had not met its goals of increased betting and that turnover had decreased by 3% when compared to similar midweek meetings. It also noted that the initiative could be revisited "when circumstances allow." Additionally, the trial had not been well-received by jockeys, stable employees, trainers, BHA staff, and owners.

The six all-weather evening meetings held between January and March drew a total of 498 runners, with at least eight competitors in 91% of the races. The matches were arranged to bring in more money from online betting, as information provided by bookmakers suggested that this was a time when bettors were shifting their attention from racing to other sports.

Even though they were paid more to participate in the trial, jockeys and stable employees expressed worries about their work-life balance, while some others expressed concern about the added strain Sunday night racing would place on an already overworked crew that attends to the current schedule.

Joe Saumarez Smith, BHA chair, noted: "Although we have learned some valuable lessons from the short trial, having considered the evidence, feedback and the recommendation from the commercial committee, the board has agreed that no further Sunday evening fixtures should be programmed at this stage."
