Fredericton City Council has passed bylaw changes, effectively ending horse racing at the New Brunswick Exhibition Grounds, a decision aligned with the site's planned redevelopment. Although harness racing ceased at the grounds over five years ago, this bylaw formalizes the discontinuation of the sport at this location.
Mayor Kate Rogers stated that the bylaw change aligns with broader land-use plans, confirming the city's direction. The grounds, owned by the city but leased long-term to N.B. Ex, are part of a 2021 agreement for joint development. This plan includes housing, a park, and possible space for George Street Middle School's replacement.
Despite previous expressions of interest in harness racing's return from Jeff MacCarthy, executive director of N.B. Ex, the bylaw solidifies the city's commitment to redevelop the area. Mayor Rogers emphasized the community's urgent need to progress with the development plans.
A steering committee, currently being finalized, will oversee the project's first phase. The committee's formation, awaiting council approval, aims to ensure N.B. Ex can continue some activities despite the redevelopment.
