Mary Hanna, a six-time Olympian renowned for her accomplishments in equestrian dressage, made a triumphant transition to harness racing as an owner and breeder.
Last Friday, her prized mare, Heavensville, outshined the competition at Australia's Melton Entertainment Park, winning the prestigious Pryde's Easifeed Maiden Pace. Hanna, a 69-year-old athlete, has her sights set on the upcoming Paris Games after representing Australia in dressage at every Olympics from Atlanta 1996 to Tokyo 2021.
Notably, she etched her name in history at the 2016 Rio Games, becoming the oldest athlete on the Australian Olympic Team and the oldest equestrian rider to compete in the Olympics. Collaborating with her dear friend and fellow owner, Emmanuel Baldacchino, Hanna's breeding venture bore fruit with the emergence of Heavensville, a four-year-old mare who triumphed in her eleventh career start. Reflecting on their partnership, Hanna acknowledged Baldacchino's passion for harness racing and their joint ownership of Heavensville's dam, Heavenly Shadow.
Despite encountering challenges and setbacks, Heavensville's recent victory marked a significant milestone. Hanna and Baldacchino prioritise the well-being and gradual maturation of their horses, embracing a patient and nurturing approach. While Hanna excels as an owner and breeder, her inclination lies in riding atop horses rather than sitting behind them as a harness racing driver. She finds the sport intriguing and distinct from her usual equestrian pursuits, appreciating the opportunity to observe its dynamics.
