Gargan's stable demonstrated significant progress

The recent weekend proved monumental for Gargan's stable progress, showcasing his remarkable strides. Despite a modest number of horses under his care, sweeping victories at the Belmont Stakes with Dornoch on Saturday and the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes with Society Man the next day held immense significance for Danny Gargan.

Coming from Louisville, Gargan termed it an "epic weekend," a milestone since he established his stable in 2013. Dornoch, his inaugural Grade 1 victor, and Society Man were among just five colts that entered his barn last year, none of them New York-breds. These two were the sole colts he acquired at Keeneland’s September yearling sale.

Gargan, 52, particularly lauded their resilience following challenging Kentucky Derby outings. Dornoch, a sibling to last year’s Derby champion Mage, encountered adversity breaking from the rail and enduring a harsh trip, yet managed a commendable 10th place finish. Society Man struggled, finishing 16th of 20.

Raised near Churchill Downs, Gargan's childhood memories are intertwined with the racetrack. Despite hopes for better Derby results, he recognised the toll the race can take on horses. His pride stemmed from seeing both his Derby entrants bounce back and triumph in subsequent races.

His lone other Derby starter, Tax, claimed for $50,000 the previous October, finished 14th in 2019. This experience fuelled Gargan's desire for more, aiming for high-calibre horses capable of stakes success.

Encouragement from owners Randy Hill and Dean Reeves led Gargan to focus on developing young stock rather than rejuvenating seasoned runners. This shift, supported by the owners, enabled him to pursue his passion for nurturing promising talent.

Early successes, including winning the Nashua Stakes (G3) with Champions Dream in 2022 and the last two editions of the Remsen (G2), highlighted Gargan's aptitude for training.

Winning a Triple Crown race elevates a trainer's profile, and Hill anticipates this recent triumph will attract more prestigious prospects to Gargan's stable. With Dornoch and Society Man, Gargan eyes future successes, considering races like the Haskell (G1) and Jim Dandy (G2) for Dornoch's prep towards the Travers (G1).

The West Virginia Derby (G3) and Super Derby at Louisiana Downs are potential targets for Society Man, a gelding. Gargan's trajectory depends on securing the right horses, but with the right prospects, Hill sees him as a prominent trainer in the making.
