Harlan Estate returns to defend his title
As the 2024 Kentucky Downs meet kicks off, trainer Whit Beckman is banking on a repeat performance from Harlan Estate, who achieved a stunning upset last year at odds of 37-1 in the Tapit Stakes. This year, the 6-year-old gelding will defend his title in the $500,000 Tapit Stakes on Thursday, showcasing a mixed record since his victory.
Harlan Estate, owned by Graham Grace Stables, has struggled with consistency, going winless in his last seven starts, although he managed a runner-up finish in his most recent race on July 20. Beckman remains hopeful that the unique layout of Kentucky Downs will work in the gelding's favour, given his previous success there. "Hopefully this is a place he wants to run well at," Beckman remarked.
Despite being 10-1 on the morning line, Beckman is encouraged by Harlan Estate's performance at Saratoga after a lengthy layoff, noting, "That was the kind of performance we were looking for." With Hall of Fame jockey Joel Rosario riding, the Beckman team is looking to build on last year’s surprising win.
However, Beckman is aware the competition is tougher this year. He also has a strong contender in the 4-year-old filly Sabalanka, who returns for a $200,000 allowance optional-claiming test. Having previously won at Kentucky Downs, she holds a morning line odds of 9-2 and will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione.
Trainer Ryan Walsh is also excited about opening day, as he enters three horses from the same mare, Sweet Nkosi. Although all are considered long shots, the unique situation adds an exciting storyline to the meet. Walsh hasn’t had a win at Kentucky Downs since 1995 and is eager to see if one of his entries can break the drought.
With anticipated high temperatures leading to accelerated post times, the Tapit Stakes is set to run at 5:41 p.m. EDT, following an afternoon of thrilling races that start with the first post at 1:25 p.m. As Kentucky Downs unveils its 2024 season, the stage is set for drama and surprise in this beloved racing venue.
