HISA's Q1 Report, racing fatalities have decreased

The latest report from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) reveals a significant improvement in racing safety during the first quarter of 2024. Racing-related fatalities have dropped by about 38% compared to the same period last year. This reduction, observed at racetracks adhering to HISA's regulations, marks a milestone in prioritising equine welfare.

HISA's CEO, Lisa Lazarus, emphasised their relentless pursuit of minimising equine fatalities, acknowledging the collective effort of the industry. She expressed pride in HISA's dedication to collaboration and ongoing improvement, inviting feedback for enhancing rules and ensuring the safety of both equine and human athletes.

For the first time in U.S. Thoroughbred racing history, quarterly fatality metrics are published, underscoring HISA's commitment to transparency. The report not only highlights the decrease in equine fatalities but also outlines individual racetrack statistics. Moving forward, HISA plans to include training-related fatalities in their annual reports.

Other key points from the report include accreditation updates for various racetracks, registration statistics for racing participants and veterinarians, and insights into the use of riding crops. Additionally, the report underscores the significant volume of veterinary treatment records received by HISA, indicating a comprehensive approach to monitoring equine health and safety.

Furthermore, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit will issue a separate quarterly report focusing on metrics related to the Anti-Doping and Medication Control Program, further enhancing transparency and accountability within the industry.
