The Maryland Jockey Club announced on Monday that Beverly Strauss, co-founder and executive director of Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue, located in Chesapeake City, Md., has been designated the Honorary Postmaster for Preakness 149. Strauss will be honoured during the Alibi Breakfast on Thursday, May 16 at Pimlico Race Course.
A U.S. Pony Club alumnus, Strauss assisted in establishing MAHR in 2002 to locate and rehome retired racehorses. MAHR, a federal 501(c)3 non-profit organisation, purchases retired racehorses and places them in good homes for recreational and competitive purposes following a period of quarantine and thorough assessment.
To celebrate the Preakness, the Alibi Breakfast, which started on the porch of the old Pimlico Clubhouse in the 1930s, brings together reporters, owners, trainers, jockeys, horsemen, and fans. The Alibi Breakfast is a tradition steeped in turf lore. Dating back to the 1930s, it’s where champions are celebrated, rivalries are renewed, and the stage is set for an unforgettable Preakness weekend.
