Frankie Dettori has not ridden in the GI Kentucky Derby since an off-the-board finish in 2000 aboard Godolphin's UAE Derby winner China Visit (Red Ransom). However, he has ridden Society Man (Good Magic) by GMP Stables LLC, Danny Gargan, and West Paces Racing LLC for this year's Derby. Daily Racing Form broke the story first on Tuesday.
Danny Gargan, who is also the owner of MGSW Dornoch (Good Magic), is the trainer of Society Man. He was last seen placing second in the GII Wood Memorial S. at Aqueduct on April 6. Luis Rivera, Jr. rode him to the second place finish, just behind Resilience (Into Mischief).
The well-liked Dettori, who was initially expected to retire in 2023, has yet to win one of the few major races in the world: the Kentucky Derby. Instead, the great jockey delayed retirement indefinitely and relocated his tack to the United States in late 2018.
