Keeneland's sale was marked by impressive sales figures

The opening day of Keeneland’s 2024 September yearling sale was marked by impressive sales figures, with a highlighted sale being a Gun Runner colt that fetched $2.2 million, purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm. The day saw total sales for 98 horses reach $54,795,000, nearly matching last year’s first session total of $55,330,000 from 110 yearlings sold. Average prices surged to $559,133, an 11.16% increase from last year, while the median climbed 12.50% to $450,000.

Keeneland officials expressed satisfaction with the diverse range of buyers and the competitive atmosphere, indicating strong confidence in the market. The event featured participation from both domestic and international buyers, including Japanese and Middle Eastern interests.

The top-priced Gun Runner colt, consigned by Four Star Sales and bred by Three Chimneys Farm, was noted for his impressive physical attributes. Whisper Hill's Todd Quast described the horse as "amazing" and indicated that such investments were necessary for acquiring high-potential stallion prospects.

In addition to the $2.2 million colt, a Gun Runner filly sold for $1.5 million, while a colt by first-crop sire Charlatan sold for $1.4 million. Multiple yearlings commanded prices of $1 million or more, showcasing the stallions' influence and the quality of the stock being presented at the sale.

Overall, Keeneland president Shannon Arvin and vice president Tony Lacy described the day as energetic and indicative of a healthy market, attributing the success to the hard work of breeders and consignors. The excitement was palpable, with hopes for continued strong sales as the auction progressed.
