Trainer Ken McPeek has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Big Sport of Turfdom award, the Turf Publicists of America announced. This honour is given to individuals who contribute to promoting Thoroughbred racing by fostering cooperation with the media. The award will be presented at the University of Arizona Race Track Program's annual luncheon on Dec. 10.
It was stated that McPeek's remarkable year, highlighted by the success of GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and GI Kentucky Oaks winner Thorpedo Anna, made him a deserving choice for the accolade. Najja Thompson, President of the Turf Publicists of America, emphasised McPeek's contributions to the sport, noting his openness to media interactions and his role as a dedicated ambassador for horse racing.
Thompson explained that McPeek's triumphs on prestigious stages, including the Kentucky Derby and additional Grade I victories with Thorpedo Anna, exemplify his significant achievements.
In response, McPeek expressed gratitude, describing himself as both honoured and humbled to receive the award. He reflected on his lifelong passion for horse racing, tracing it back to his childhood, and shared his commitment to promoting the sport he loves.
McPeek previously earned the Big Sport of Turfdom award in 2002, making this his second recognition for outstanding contributions to Thoroughbred racing and media collaboration.
