Kyprios triumphed at Goodwood Cup

Kyprios set a new course record and solidified his status as Europe’s premier stayer with a dominant win in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup, the standout event of the first day of the Goodwood Festival.

Guided by Ryan Moore for trainer Aidan O’Brien, Kyprios followed up his triumph in last month’s Gold Cup (G1) with a resounding six-length victory in 3:21.53, breaking the previous record of 3:24.86. John and Thady Gosden’s runners filled the remaining places, with Sweet William finishing second and Gregory taking third, just a head behind.

The six-year-old Kyprios, a son of the late Galileo, achieved his sixth top-level victory and his second Goodwood Cup win, having first claimed the two-mile feature during an unbeaten 2022 season.

Early in 2023, Kyprios faced a career-threatening joint infection, but thanks to the skillful care and patience of O’Brien’s team, he has made a remarkable comeback.

O’Brien hailed Kyprios as an "incredible horse," crediting the team for his success. He praised Ryan's superb handling despite a challenging ride, emphasising Kyprios's immense class and staying ability. Looking ahead, O’Brien highlighted the importance of the Gold Cup and mentioned considering the Irish St Leger if Kyprios performs well. He noted the horse's resilience in returning from injury and facing tough conditions.

Moore commented on the race, expecting a strong pace and acknowledging Kyprios’s ability to stay well, despite a slip on the top turn. He praised Kyprios for effortlessly setting a track record.

Co-owner Michael Tabor remarked on Kyprios's extraordinary turn of foot and consistent performance, crediting Aidan for bringing him back to form. He noted that while Kyprios thrives at two miles, he can handle various distances.
