The Mare Programs, which received a substantial budget of $800,000, have been completely exhausted due to the overwhelming response from Ontario breeders once again.
The Ontario Thoroughbred Improvement Program's Mare Purchase and Recruitment Programs have reached their maximum capacity. Enthusiastic participation from Ontario breeders has resulted in an impressive surge in the number of mares within the province and a significant improvement in the overall quality of their bloodlines.
David Clancy, a seasoned owner and breeder, as well as the proprietor of Clancy CPA & Co, a prominent accounting firm in Toronto, lauded the Mare Purchase Program as an excellent incentive. He explained that he seized the opportunity this year to enhance his mare collection by acquiring younger stock, particularly since some of his prized mares were advancing in age. With the assistance of the Mare Purchase Program, Clancy successfully purchased three mares in two prestigious sales. At the 2023 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, he acquired the impressive Carta de Oro (Medaglia d'Oro-Communique) and the promising Marge Takes Charge (Empire Maker-Sip Sip). Furthermore, during the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale, Clancy added the talented Daddy Issues (Scat Daddy-Issues) to his growing portfolio.
In addition to the Mare Purchase Program, the Mare Recruitment Program attracted horse owners from all across North America who opted to send their mares to Ontario for foaling. The allure of the coveted "Ontario Bred" status, which comes with the privilege of foaling in the province, proved to be an irresistible advantage. As a result of the tremendous response, the allocated $800,000 for the Mare Programs has been fully utilised, indicating the immense popularity and success of these initiatives.
Clancy expressed his confidence in Ontario as an ideal breeding destination, highlighting the exceptional purses offered at Woodbine Racetrack, where horses ultimately compete. He firmly believes that Ontario provides an excellent environment for breeding and racing endeavours, making it a top choice for breeders seeking both financial rewards and a prestigious platform to showcase their horses.
