Moira Crowned 'Queen' at the Breeders' Cup

In a moment of sheer emotion, trainer Kevin Attard celebrated the stunning triumph of Ontario-bred mare Moira in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar. This victory marked a significant milestone for Attard, as it was his first win at the prestigious World Championships. Moira, a five-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper, became the seventh Canadian-bred to achieve this honour since the event's inception 41 years ago.

After a gripping race, Moira, who endured an eventful career including a disqualification in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes, emerged victorious by half a length, fending off fierce competition from Cinderella’s Dream (GB). Her rider, Flavien Prat, executed a strategic move close to the quarter pole which proved pivotal in securing the win. Moira’s finish time of 2:14.95 earned her a stellar 100 Beyer Speed Figure, while her owners—X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, and SF Bloodstock—celebrated a payday of $1,040,000, lifting her career earnings to nearly $3 million.

Reflecting on Moira's journey, Attard shared his gratitude for the support from her ownership group and the formative experiences they had together. Donato Lanni, who gathered friends to form the ownership syndicate, emphasised the camaraderie in sharing such a rewarding venture. With Moira's legacy solidified, the racing world watches eagerly as her future unfolds.
