Nevada Book Will Have Early Futures At The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is set to have a significant shift in the betting landscape for its 2025 running, as only one Nevada sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, will offer early futures betting. This marks a notable change from recent years, where competition primarily existed between two Las Vegas sportsbooks—Circa Sports and Caesars.

Circa Sports has announced that it will no longer participate in fixed-odds futures for the Derby, opting instead to focus solely on pari-mutuel betting. This decision leaves Caesars as the sole operator providing fixed-odds futures for the Derby, a shift that could influence the betting market considerably.

Caesars has recently appointed Jason Jingeleski as its new oddsmaker for horse racing, taking over from Paul Bach, who has transitioned to a more supportive role. Jingeleski, who has spent nearly six years in various roles at Caesars and William Hill properties, is excited about the opportunities ahead, particularly with the return of prominent trainer Bob Baffert, whose horses typically attract significant betting interest.

While Jingeleski has indicated that Caesars will start booking Derby futures in the fall, it is expected that these will not be available until after the Breeders’ Cup, around November 1. This time frame allows Caesars to dominate the futures market as the only venue for continuous betting until the Derby draw in May.

The shift in the Nevada betting landscape is particularly crucial since state law allows Nevada to operate fixed-odds futures for the Derby, unlike other states where such practices are not permitted. This unique status enables Caesars to have a significant influence over the futures market for one of America's most prestigious horse races.

Looking ahead to potential betting favourites, Jingeleski is keeping an eye on the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, suggesting that it may attract considerable betting action as the opening odds for the Derby are established.

This changing dynamic reflects broader trends in horse racing betting and the unique challenges and opportunities faced by sportsbooks in the evolving landscape of legal gambling in the U.S.
