New Track Record At Century Downs

Outlawguns N Roses, a three-year-old filly by Captive Audience, etched her name into Century Downs history with a commanding harness racing victory in the $122,200 Gord and Illa Rumpel Memorial on Saturday, August 11. Driven by Dave Kelly, the filly became the fastest three-year-old ever at Century Downs, clocking in at an impressive 1:51.3.

In the race, Outlawguns N Roses initially took the lead but allowed Kootenay Cocoa (Phil Giesbrecht) to set the early pace, with opening fractions of :26.4 and :55.2. Kelly made a decisive move on the backstretch, reclaiming the lead, while favourite Byby Baby Byby (Mike Hennessy) attempted to follow but couldn’t keep up as they reached the three-quarter mark in 1:23.1.

As they rounded the final turn, Outlawguns N Roses shifted into high gear, leaving her competition behind and securing an eight-length victory. Byby Baby Byby finished second, while Over Ice (Brandon Campbell) came in third, four lengths further back.

This performance shattered the previous track record for a three-year-old pacing filly by a full second, and also surpassed the all-sex three-year-old record set by Kneedeep N Custard in 2019.

Outlawguns N Roses has now won six of her eight starts this year, including the Alberta Sires Stakes Diamond final. Trained by Rodney Starkewski, the filly has amassed $236,500 in earnings and has 10 wins in 17 career starts. Starkewski co-owns her with Clauzette Byckal.

On the same card, heavy favourite Grey Horizon, driven by Brandon Campbell, claimed the $105,570 Ralph Klein Memorial for three-year-old males. The colt set a personal best, leading the race from start to finish with fractions of :27, :56.2, and 1:23.1, ultimately winning by a length and a quarter in 1:53. Solar Solution (Phil Giesbrecht) finished second, holding off the closing Rum N Custard (Kelly Hoerdt) for third.

This victory marks Grey Horizon's second stake final win this year. He previously won the Moore’s Mile Breeders’ Stake for Campbell, who trains the colt for owners Jodi Loftus, Raymond Henry, and George Rogers. Grey Horizon now boasts nine wins from 17 career starts, with earnings of $206,710.

Century Downs will host its next race on Friday, August 16.
