Southwind Coors (Walner), the winner of the 2023 Goodtimes race, continued their successful season with another close victory in harness racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The horse quickly surged forward to take the lead from post eight with Chris Christoforou in the driver's seat, reaching the first checkpoint in a time of 27.2. He hit the halfway mark in a swift:57.2. He maintained a comfortable lead until the three-quarter mark at 1:26.4. The initial leader, Mercutio (Tyler Jones), lacked any significant contribution in the final stretch. At the same time, Like Chaos (Trevor Henry) made a strong late surge. He quickly shut down the frontrunner, but Southwind Coors narrowly held on to win in a time of 1:53.4. Mercutio finished in third place, trailing the winner by a significant margin of seven-and-a-half lengths.
Southwind Coors, a competitor in the prestigious Hambletonian last year, has emerged victorious in two out of three conditioned events in 2024 under the guidance of trainer Matt Bax. The four-year-old has a record of seven wins out of 27 races, accumulating a total of $351,785 in earnings. The gelding is owned by Bax Stable of Campbellville, Glengate Farms of Erin, Dave Hudson of Dallas, and Craig Wilson of Burlington.
