Pacific victors set their sights on the Breeders' Cup

The recent Pacific Classic day at Del Mar showcased a thrilling array of performances, particularly highlighting the ambitions of several stakes winners as they set their sights on the Breeders' Cup approaching in November.

Trainer Doug O’Neill celebrated a remarkable upset victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, where his horse Mixto triumphed at odds of 22-1. This victory surprised some, especially in a race perceived as competitive following the scratch of favoured mare Adare Manor. O’Neill commended jockey Kyle Frey's skilful ride, noting that the horse found himself in an ideal position throughout the race.

Both Mixto and O’Neill’s other contender emerged from the race in excellent condition, which is encouraging for future competitions. O’Neill expressed elation over Mixto's performance, underscoring the potential he had hinted at prior to this race.

In another noteworthy performance, Kyle Frey not only rode Mixto to victory in the Classic but also piloted Gold Phoenix to win the Del Mar Handicap (G2), a key "win-and-you're-in" race for the Breeders' Cup Turf. Trainer Phil D’Amato praised his team for their hard work, noting that Gold Phoenix's continued success over three consecutive years in this handicap is a testament to the individualised care each horse receives in preparation for big races.

D’Amato also indicated that the 6-year-old gelding might not race again before the Breeders' Cup, preferring to evaluate each horse on a case-by-case basis.

D’Amato's excellent day continued with a victory in the Green Flash (G3) with Motorious, securing his second straight win in that race, once again affirming his affinity for the Del Mar turf course. This particular win marked the first of three graded stakes victories that day for D’Amato.

The cycle of success didn't stop there; he closed out the day by winning the Del Mar Mile (G2) with Conclude. D’Amato's approach to training and racing has clearly paid off, especially given how each of his horses returned in strong shape post-race.

In the Torrey Pines (G3), trainer Bob Baffert showcased the potential of his 3-year-old filly Hope Road, who decisively took the lead and finished ahead of her stablemate, Nothing Like You. Baffert expressed admiration for Hope Road’s progress, noting she had shown exceptional ability during her development. He maintained a cautious approach regarding future races for her, focusing on savouring the win for the moment.

As all involved look ahead to the Breeders' Cup, expectations remain high, especially with both O'Neill and D'Amato positioning their horses well as strong contenders given their recent successes.
