Pat’ssewingmachine Bolts to Triumph in Barbados’ Coolmore

Woodbine’s native Pat’ssewingmachine and his jockey Teshawn Hazelwood took over So Sauve (Ireland) to win the $50,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados this Saturday, a local preparation for the Sandy Lane Gold Cup.

The 6-year-old trainee of Woodbine’s Ted Holder is being coached for the new Fun in the Sun Racing Syndicate, with his first start scheduled in Barbados since he came in  ninth in consecutive optional claiming races. This time, being only the ninth start in the course of his career, he arrived third in the five-horse field travelling 1800 metres, overtaken by 2023 winner apprentice Hazelwood, yet gaining three-wide earlier his stable companion Forester Humor and a favourite Renaisance Frolic.

Pat’ssewingmachine took an overly wide turn near the clubhouse as the two leaders set pace fractions of 25.80, 50.00 and 1:15.40 on the firm turf. After withdrawing the speed and backtracking Forester Humor and Renaisance Frolic on the backstretch, the horse moved three wide into the track. Forester Humor, a son of Ontario stallion Old Forester, lost his spirit and Renaisance Frolic was checked hard by jockey Rey Williams, clearing the lead for  Pat’ssewingmachine as Nalicia Cozier’s So Suave, last year’s Collmore champion, gained distance. Yet, the pair came up half a length short as Pat’ssewingmachine snatched the victory with the time of 1:52.80, his second in career.

Fun in the Sun Racing is a brainchild of Darwin Clarke and Deryck Lynch. Pat’ssewingmachine, bred by Ken and  late Sarah Ramsey in Maryland, was purchased by Sarah at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling sale for meagre $3,500. The Ramseys, already having sent horses thrice from the United States to win the Gold Cup, are planning to have at least two promising starters in the upcoming Golden Cup race.
