Premier Delight, sired by Bettors Delight, emerged as the outsider with the highest odds in the Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace, held at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Tuesday (Mar. 26).
Jeff Hunt positioned the mare in the third spot along the pylons while Major League N, driven by Ed Hensley, took the lead and set the pace with a quarter-mile time of :28.1. Premier Delight then shifted to the outside and settled in behind the first-over horse, So Frisky, guided by Colin Kelly, as they reached the halfway point in :57.4.
Maintaining her position as the second horse in the outer line, Premier Delight trailed behind through three-quarters in 1:26.1. As they entered the home stretch, she made a decisive move by pulling out from behind the cover and accelerated past the top three contenders. Crossing the finish line in 1:57, she secured an impressive one-length victory, causing an unexpected upset at odds of 18-1.
So Frisky narrowly surpassed Major League N to claim the second-place position.
Premier Delight had a slow start to the year, going winless in her first seven races. However, she recently broke that streak and secured a victory in a conditioned race last week. Trained by Jeff Hunt, Premier Delight is co-owned by Jeff Hunt, his father Pat Hunt, and Miguel Freitas. As a four-year-old, she has achieved seven wins out of 39 career starts, accumulating earnings of $64,616.
The racing action at The Raceway at the Western Fair District will continue on Wednesday, Mar. 26, featuring a total of 11 races.
