Quill and Sheridan Take Top Honours in AHDC Trot Divisions
On Saturday, November 9, veteran drivers Seamus Quill and Yogi Sheridan claimed victories in their respective $10,417 American Harness Drivers Club (AHDC) Trot divisions at Freehold Raceway.
In the first division, Irish-born Quill, who has competed in four countries over the past three years, led Feeriedesbrouets FR to a 2:02.3 win. Quill initially settled in fourth through a :30 opening quarter, then moved up to challenge the 3-2 favourite, Call Me Thefireman, into a 1:02.2 half. Feeriedesbrouets FR tracked the leader closely, advancing smoothly to secure a 1-1/4-length victory. Masster Blue, driven by John Calabrese, held on to finish third, with Awol Hanover closing in fourth.
Quill not only drove but also owns and trains Feeriedesbrouets FR, a nine-year-old mare by Vanishing Point, who rewarded backers with $13.20 for the win.
In the second AHDC division, Sheridan rallied from off the pace with Lionhead, clocking in at 2:02.3. Shoemaker Hanover led after a :29.2 first quarter, while Sheridan positioned Lionhead in sixth. As My Big Kadillac launched a bid past the half, Sheridan grabbed a second-over spot heading into the final turn. He urged Lionhead forward in the stretch, eventually edging out Shoemaker Hanover by three-quarters of a length. My Big Kadillac finished third, followed by Pilsner Frosty in fourth.
Lionhead, an eight-year-old gelding by Uncle Peter, is owned and trained by Terry Morgan. He paid $13.40 for the win.
