Renowned Woodbine Jockey, Rafael Hernandez, Makes Move to New York

Esteemed Woodbine jockey Rafael Hernandez has shifted his racing focus from Turfway Park in Kentucky to New York for the winter season.

The move comes as a poignant decision for Hernandez, who has relocated to New York to be closer to his family following the recent passing of his father.

Represented by jockey agent Rudy Rodriguez, Jr., the 38-year-old Puerto Rican rider is set to grace the tracks of Aqueduct Racetrack with four mounts on this Saturday's card. Hernandez, recognised as Canada's Outstanding Jockey with his 2020 Sovereign Award win, has been a prominent figure at Woodbine Racetrack from April to December each year. His partnership with Grade 2-winner Moira, who triumphed in the 2022 Queen's Plate and earned Horse of the Year honours, has solidified his status in the racing world.

With an impressive tally of over 3,000 career wins, Hernandez has consistently placed in the top three of the Woodbine jockey standings since 2017. Notably, amidst challenging competition, he clinched third place last year, amassing prize earnings exceeding $6 million. His arrival in New York on Sunday marked the beginning of a temporary stay until April, when he is due to return to Woodbine.

Rodriguez, Jr. expressed optimism about Hernandez's New York venture, highlighting his versatility and experience across various racing surfaces. Having tasted success at Woodbine with Grade 1 victories on Etoile and Last Call, Hernandez's skill set extends to the dirt, turf, and synthetic tracks. The potential for building new connections and securing promising opportunities in New York excites both Hernandez and Rodriguez, Jr. as they embark on this collaborative journey.

This Saturday, Hernandez will seek a strong start aboard Ghostly Girl, Blue Plate Special, Easy Play, and Connect the Brocks in different races. With a proven track record and a reputation for adaptability, Hernandez is poised to make a mark on the New York racing circuit, drawing upon his wealth of experience and unwavering dedication to the sport.
