Silver Label triumphed in Woodbine Mohawk Park
Silver Label (Bettors Delight) made a triumphant return to Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (July 27), securing victory against a strong field of harness racing distaffs in the $36,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred-Handicap. This win followed two top-three finishes on the Grand Circuit.
In the race, driver Doug McNair positioned Silver Label in the four-hole entering the first turn, as Tells On A Roll (Travis Cullen) set the early pace with fractions of :26.4 and :56.1. Silver Label initiated her first-over movement just past the halfway mark and quickly closed in on the leader as they approached the final turn.
The final stretch saw Silver Label and Tells On A Roll engaged in a fierce battle, neither willing to give an inch. As they raced into deep stretch, Silver Label pulled ahead of Tells On A Roll, but then her stablemate Prohibition Legal (Louis-Philippe Roy) emerged from the pocket, making a strong push. However, Silver Label found an extra gear and crossed the finish line first in a time of 1:51.
Prohibition Legal finished a close second, with Tells On A Roll just a half-length behind in third.
Prior to this race, Silver Label had competed in two events at The Meadowlands, achieving a third-place finish in the Perfect Sting and a second-place finish, just a half-length shy of victory, in the Dorothy Haughton Memorial. The Millar Farms homebred has now accumulated 23 wins in 49 career starts, totalling earnings of $1,503,833 under the guidance of trainer Nick Gallucci. She is a two-time O’Brien Award winner and a former champion in the Ontario Sires Stakes.
In a thrilling co-featured $36,000 Preferred Pace, Jabberwocky (Hes Watching), making a comeback after a narrow setback in his previous race, rallied from the back to pull off a stunning upset at 13-1 in a tightly contested finish.
Jabberwocky had been positioned seventh but advanced as horses fanned out while entering the final turn. Driver Trevor Henry navigated him through traffic, and as the field approached mid-stretch, Jabberwocky was itching for an opening. He found a gap on the inside in the final eighth and surged forward to win on the wire in 1:49.1. Whichwaytothebeach (Sylvain Filion) finished a nose behind in second, while Stockade Seelster (Roy) came in third.
This marked Jabberwocky’s first victory at the top overnight level after 81 career starts, bringing his total wins to 13 and earnings to $297,840. He is trained by Rick Zeron, who co-owns the five-year-old alongside James Walker of Port Perry, John Donato of Oakville, and the Earn It To Burn It Stable of King City.
Both drivers Roy and Henry had a successful night, with three wins each.
Live racing will continue at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday, July 29, starting at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
