Smile Happy's Comeback: Challenges and optimism

Smile Happy, owned by Lucky Seven Stable, has been absent from racing since the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) at Ellis Park on July 1. His refusal to approach the starting gate caused a delay in post time, and they had to walk him backward. He is set to return on January 20 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in the $175,000 Louisiana Stakes (G3). Trainer Kenny McPeek expresses cautious optimism about Smile Happy's return to form.

After winning the Alysheba Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, expectations were high for Smile Happy in 2023. However, his behavior before the Stephen Foster Stakes indicated issues. His fifth-place finish confirmed them. McPeek notes that Smile Happy has been challenging to train and load into the gate. The horse displays a solid will and prefers training on a farm in Florida. Despite some concerns, McPeek has been working with him on gate schooling.

Since November 4, Smile Happy has undergone eight training sessions at Silverleaf Hills Training Center in Ocala, Florida. While physically fit, he has shown mental challenges in race preparation. McPeek highlights that Smile Happy thrives on a consistent routine. He has been trying to maintain it. Smile Happy initially showed no issues as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old. However, last spring, problematic behavior began. The goal is maintaining a stable routine to keep smiling, happy, content, and ready for racing.
