Summers Reassesses Training Future Following Filoso's Promise

Chad Summers, who had been contemplating retirement from training due to frustration with various aspects of racing, found a renewed sense of purpose with the arrival of Gold Square’s promising 2-year-old, Filoso. Noting Filoso's natural talent, Summers reflected on his extensive experience with quality horses over the past two decades and acknowledged the excitement the colt brings for the future.

Filoso, a son of City of Light and the Bodemeister mare Kenda, was acquired as a yearling for $210,000. Owner Al Gold, hoping for something special, named him after a close friend. As Filoso prepares for his fourth race in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs, Summers expresses eagerness for the opportunity, emphasising the significance of gaining experience on the track leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

Despite a learning curve, Filoso showed promise in previous races, including a victory at Saratoga and a noteworthy third place in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. Gold also recognises the upcoming race as crucial for gauging the colt's potential.

As Summers approaches his 40th birthday, he reflects on whether to continue in the challenging world of training. He admits feeling overwhelmed towards the end of the Saratoga meet but acknowledges that Filoso's capabilities have rejuvenated his passion for the sport. Both Summers and Gold believe that the excitement surrounding Filoso will keep Summers engaged in the racing world.
