In a thrilling showcase of three-year-old pacing talent, Nijinsky emerged victorious in the 41st edition of the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park on June 15. Guided by driver Louis-Philippe Roy, Nijinsky capitalised on a meticulously crafted race strategy to secure the prestigious title.
Amidst a highly competitive field, the race unfolded with Funtime Bayama seizing an early lead under Sylvain Filion's guidance. The pace intensified as Captain Albano, Captain Luke, and Captains Quarters jostled for position, setting a dynamic tempo from the outset.
By the half-mile mark in :54.1, Captains Quarters, driven by Jody Jamieson, surged into the lead, maintaining a strong position through three-quarters in 1:21.2. Meanwhile, Nijinsky, positioned seventh under Roy's calculated approach, remained poised and patient.
As the field turned for home, Captains Quarters held a slender lead, with Legendary Hanover making a bold bid to challenge. However, it was Nijinsky who unleashed a decisive sprint midway down the stretch. Displaying remarkable acceleration, Nijinsky surged past Captains Quarters to claim victory by just over a length in a career-best time of 1:48.1.
Reflecting on the race, Louis-Philippe Roy praised Nijinsky's responsiveness and stamina: "He’s just so easy to drive. I knew coming down the lane. I didn't know how much Jody had left, but I really liked my chances there. I knew coming off the helmet, he would give me a pretty good kick.”
Trained by Anthony Beaton and owned by West Wins Stable, Casie Coleman, Ross Warriner, John Fielding, and Mark Dumain, Nijinsky has showcased exceptional form this season with five consecutive wins. His maturity and speed have been evident since his two-year-old campaign, where he demonstrated promise despite finishing as a runner-up in two Ontario Sires Stakes Gold divisions.
Anthony Beaton, celebrating his first Cup victory, highlighted Nijinsky's development: "He came back, and he's so much more mature. You could just do anything with him, and he’s still got that high speed."
Bred by Jeffrey Snyder and purchased for $120,000 at the 2022 Harrisburg Yearling Sale, Nijinsky has now amassed a career earnings total of $723,362 with his sixth-lifetime victory.
Nijinsky, paying $7.90 to win as the second choice, reaffirmed his status as a rising star in the harness racing world, thrilling fans and connections alike with his stellar performance in the Pepsi North America Cup.
