The National Driving Championship (NDC) slated for July 5

Standardbred Canada recently interviewed drivers James MacDonald and Tyler Borth as they gear up for the National Driving Championship (NDC), slated for July 5 at Hippodrome 3R in Trois-Rivières, Que.

MacDonald, a three-time consecutive O’Brien Award winner as Driver of the Year, is no stranger to national competitions, having finished second once and clinched the championship another time. Reflecting on his experiences, MacDonald expressed his excitement about the upcoming event and the opportunity to represent Canada once again. He emphasised the thrill of competing and the honour of wearing the red and white.

In contrast, Borth, who secured victory at the Ontario Regional Driving Championship at The Raceway at Western Fair District in April, described his first-time experience as special and meaningful, particularly because it was at one of his home tracks where he earned his first win. He sees the NDC as a chance to build on this success and potentially qualify for the 2025 World Driving Championship in New Zealand, aiming to learn from experienced drivers like Louis-Philippe Roy.

Both drivers discussed their preparations and expectations for the NDC. MacDonald highlighted the tough competition, singling out drivers like Doug McNair and Tyler Borth, whom he races against regularly in Ontario. He acknowledged the depth of talent in the field and expressed his determination to perform well.

Borth, while eager to win, also emphasised the broader experience of competing at a different track and learning from seasoned drivers. He acknowledged the challenge posed by drivers with a home track advantage, such as MacDonald and McNair.

Beyond the competition, MacDonald expressed his desire to visit New Zealand, a country he missed visiting during a previous trip to Australia. He regretted not making the trip then and now looks forward to the opportunity that winning the NDC would provide.

For both MacDonald and Borth, representing Canada on an international stage would be a culmination of their dedication and hard work in harness racing. They eagerly anticipate the chance to compete and showcase their skills, aiming to don the Canadian colours proudly.
