According to a report by The Baltimore Banner on Wednesday, Churchill Downs, Inc. has expressed interest in acquiring Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. This potential acquisition would grant CDI ownership of the prestigious venue that hosts two of the Triple Crown races.
This development has the potential to disrupt a well-earned strategy for the state to acquire Pimlico due to an existing agreement between The Stronach Group and the recently established Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority.
The completion of that agreement in mid-March necessitates the approval of the legislature in order to move forward. The bill successfully cleared the House of Delegates on Monday evening, although its fate in the Senate remains uncertain. The legislative session of the Maryland General Assembly concludes at midnight on Monday.
According to a source from The Baltimore Banner, CDI has actively opposed the proposed legislation.
On the other hand, Craig Fravel from The Stronach Group stated that CDI has yet to present any proposal to acquire the track from his company, and TSG is currently not engaged in any discussions with them.
