Thoroughbred Makeover Ambassador Award

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) announced that nominations are now being accepted for the revamped Thoroughbred Makeover Ambassador Award for 2024. Regardless of whether the registered horse competed, any graduate of the Thoroughbred Makeover is eligible for this award, irrespective of its current ownership. Nominations can be made through an online form available at TheRRP.org, where nominators can provide details about the horse's post-Makeover competitive journey, accomplishments, and overall updates.

“The RRP has identified tracking and recognising the accomplishments of Thoroughbred sport horses in a comprehensive way as being crucial to furthering our mission to increase demand for the breed, so we're starting in earnest with Makeover graduates,” said RRP Executive Director Kirsten Green. “We know Makeover graduates have gone on to compete at the upper levels of sport, contribute to sport horse breeding programs, serve as faithful trail mounts, and everything in between – and it's time to capture better and celebrate those accomplishments.”

Since 2015, the Ambassador Award has undergone several revisions. However, starting in 2022, it transitioned into an accolade honouring chief steward Bill Kraatz, acknowledging outstanding horsemanship demonstrated by a trainer during Thoroughbred Makeover week. Renamed the Bill Kraatz Thoroughbred Makeover Ambassador Award, it will now spotlight a Thoroughbred Makeover graduate horse that has become an ambassador, showcasing the athleticism and adaptability of retired racehorses beyond their racing careers.

Nominations will remain open until July 1. The recipient will be announced in September and feted at the Awards Party on Friday, October 11, held at the Kentucky Horse Park.
