The Ed Friendly Industry Service Award, also known as the TOC Chairman's Award, is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions and demonstrated exceptional service to the Thoroughbred racing sector. In 2024, Rick Gold was chosen by the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) as the deserving recipient of this prestigious accolade.
Gold's illustrious career spans eight years of dedicated service to the TOC and various other industry boards. Notably, he served as the Chairman of TOC's Integrity & Safety Committee, where his leadership played a pivotal role in advancing the welfare and integrity standards within horse racing. As he embarks on retirement, Gold leaves behind a legacy of tireless commitment and unwavering dedication to safeguarding California and broader industry interests, particularly during crucial moments such as the formation of HISA. His name now joins the esteemed list of past recipients, including prominent figures in California racing such as Mace Siegel, John Harris, Bob and Beverly Lewis, Jerry and Ann Moss, and most recently, Mike Pegram.
Rick Gold epitomises the contemporary owner, boasting substantial equine investments in both California and Australia. Renowned for his collaborative approach, Rick frequently co-owns horses with others, showcasing unwavering support for smaller trainers and the wider racing community. At his essence, he remains a passionate fan of the sport.
Gold's impressive campaign includes notable horses such as Hit The Road, the 2021 Frank E. Kilroe Mile grade 1 winner, and Athabascan, who recently secured a commendable second place in Australia's prestigious Sydney Cup Group 1 race. With Athabascan emerging as a promising contender for this year's Melbourne Cup in November, Gold's involvement in both regions underscores his commitment to excellence and his enduring impact on the global racing scene.
"When I reflect on the distinguished individuals who have received this award in the past, I believe Rick belongs among their ranks," said TOC Chairman Gary Fenton. "His unwavering dedication, leadership, and compassion exemplify the spirit of the Chairman's Award and embody the best of California racing."
Gold's achievements will be celebrated at the TOC's Southern California Annual Meeting, scheduled to take place at Del Mar on August 10. This event will serve as a platform to honour his outstanding contributions to the Thoroughbred racing industry.
