Tributes to John Hendrickson

The racing community is coming together to grieve the sudden loss of John Hendrickson, a powerful figure in philanthropy and horse racing, who passed away at 59. His contributions have touched many in Saratoga and beyond, particularly through his work with the Marylou Whitney Stables and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Hendrickson's dedication to the racing community was profound. Following the death of his wife, Marylou Whitney, he continued her legacy by campaigning graded stakes winners and furthering initiatives that improved local facilities and programs. He played a key role in the $20-million capital campaign for the Museum, contributing to its enhanced offerings, including innovative galleries and a new immersive film experience.

The Saratoga community benefited from Hendrickson's philanthropic spirit in numerous ways. He was instrumental in the Saratoga Backstretch Appreciation Program, which provided vital services and support to backstretch workers. Hendrickson's commitment to healthcare in this community culminated in the recent opening of the Saratoga Backstretch Clinic, a project that honours his late wife's dedication to the well-being of those working behind the scenes in horse racing.

Leaders from the racing industry have expressed their admiration and sorrow over his passing. Dave O'Rourke, President and CEO of NYRA, highlighted Hendrickson's lasting influence and philanthropic efforts, emphasising his leadership in both the racing realm and the Saratoga community. Cate Masterson, director of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, praised Hendrickson as a visionary whose passion was palpable and whose presence will be sorely missed.

Chaplain Humberto Chavez reflected on Hendrickson's deep commitment to the backstretch community, noting his role as a friend and supporter who consistently championed initiatives to uplift others. Chavez's heartfelt remarks underscored the impact Hendrickson had not only as a benefactor but also as a cherished community member and friend.

As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that John Hendrickson’s legacy will live on in the projects he championed and the lives he changed within the racing community. His generosity, dedication, and passion serve as a lasting inspiration to many, and his absence is felt deeply. The racing community invites all to join in honouring Hendrickson's memory as they mourn his loss and support one another.
