Unbeaten Margosgotthecargo Shines Alongside MacDonald at Mohawk Park
Trainer Andy Moore's homebred three-year-old pacing filly, Margosgotthecargo, set a new lifetime best of 1:53.1 on Friday, 1st March at Woodbine Mohawk Park, securing her sixth consecutive victory.
Returning to Mohawk after triumphing in the Blizzard Series final a fortnight ago, the unbeaten offspring of Big Jim and Maplelea slashed her personal record by three-fifths of a second. Accompanied by the skilled reinsman James MacDonald, Margosgotthecargo surged from a trailing position to clinch victory in the second race of the evening, a $19,000 fillies and mares conditioned pace.
Commencing from post nine, Margosgotthecargo found herself in sixth place as a few mares surged from the inner positions. Despite one horse faltering and dropping back, Premier Delight, steered by Scott Young, took the lead with a brisk :26.4 opening quarter.
Maintaining the pace, Premier Delight led through fractions of :56.1 and 1:24.4. As the race reached its midpoint, MacDonald initiated Margosgotthecargo's acceleration, prompting Starbets and Trevor Henry to make a move from the four-hole.
Though her cover slowed in the final bend, Margosgotthecargo widened her stride and powered to victory, claiming a 1-1/2 length win with a rapid :27 final segment. Yes Im Hungry, driven by Phil Hudon, surged between rivals to secure the second position, while Starbets closed the gap in the homestretch to finish third.
Margosgotthecargo commenced her racing journey with a maiden triumph at Rideau Carleton Raceway in December under the guidance of her trainer from Osgoode, Ontario. Subsequently, she dominated her next five races upon venturing to Mohawk. The exceptional filly has amassed earnings of $58,200 in her nascent career.
Those who backed Margosgotthecargo, the overwhelming 1-9 favourite, received a modest payout of $2.30 for a winning bet.
Angostura Hanover, a two-time Blizzard champion and recent runner-up to Margosgotthecargo, triumphed in her $23,000 race on Friday at odds of $4.80, clocking a career-best time of 1:52 under the tutelage of trainer Kyle Fellows.
Launching a winning streak, James MacDonald guided the four-year-old Betting Line-Armbro Amoretto mare to victory in the evening's first race. MacDonald completed a hat trick when Wildcat Star, priced at $3, triumphed in 1:51.3 under the training of Tim Gillespie.
Later in the sixth race, Canada's three-time Driver of the Year partnered with another undefeated three-year-old pacing filly, Catch My Breath, bred by Bob McIntosh.
Priced at $2.40, the filly, a sibling of O'Brien Award finalist Moment Is Here and sired by Thinking Out Loud, secured her second consecutive win in a fresh record time of 1:54.2, outpacing stablemate Think Ahead.
MacDonald's winning streak continued in the eighth race as he steered trotting mare Spicy Red Head, priced at $7.30, to victory in 1:56.1 for trainer Courtney Robson, rounding off an impressive total of five wins across the ten-race card.
