Vives Recovering After Spill, Week Ends on a Somber Note

Woodbine witnessed an exhilarating week of racing, showcasing thrilling contests across various class levels. However, Sunday's events took a sobering turn with a distressing spill and the unfortunate loss of two horses.

Throughout the week, Woodbine resonated with excitement as races unfolded across diverse categories, with victories being evenly distributed among an array of owners, trainers, and jockeys. The standout performance came from My Boy Prince in the Queenston Stakes, igniting anticipation for the upcoming King's Plate on August 17.

Trainer Mark Casse is contemplating My Boy Prince's next outing in the Plate Trial on July 20, while also considering the return of Essex Serpent, owned by Manfred and Penny Conrad, in the Marine Stakes on June 29.

With 24 different trainers clinching victories in 34 races, and 18 jockeys demonstrating their prowess in a fiercely competitive field, the week was marked by diverse successes. Notable among the winning trainers were Bill Tharrenos and Norm McKnight, each securing a triple triumph, alongside other multiple winners such as Sid Attard, Kevin Attard, Pat Dixon, and Ron Sadler.

Several trainers celebrated their first wins of the 2024 season, including Julie Belhumeur, Harold Ladouceur, and Howard Keen. Noteworthy among these victories was the triumph of the speedy filly Victoria Elizabeth, guided to victory by jockey Josh Scott.

Notable debuts were witnessed by Canadian-bred newcomers Live Lucky and Stitches, both impressing with their maiden outings. Live Lucky, trained by Kevin Attard, showcased a stellar performance in a turf maiden optional, while Stitches, under the guidance of Sid Attard, marked a promising start to his racing career.

Despite the week's highs, Sunday's races ended on a sombre note with a tragic spill in the final race. Leading apprentice Sofia Vives was involved in the incident, necessitating a hospital visit. Tragically, popular nine-year-old gelding Hallie's Hero succumbed to injuries sustained in the fall. Additionally, earlier in the day, seven-year-old Win D'Oro suffered a fatal injury during a claiming race.

Fortunately, Vives escaped serious injury, as confirmed by Woodbine Communications. However, the racing community mourns the loss of Hallie's Hero and Win D'Oro, two beloved contenders whose spirited performances will be remembered.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks inherent in the sport, underscoring the importance of safety measures and the collective support of the racing community during challenging times.
