Walner Yearling Fetches $1 Million at Harrisburg Sale
Harrisburg, PA — Cambridge Hanover, a Walner yearling and half-brother to the exceptional 2-year-old trotter Maryland, made waves in the harness racing world by selling for $1 million. This sale, conducted during the inaugural session of the 86th Standardbred Horse Sale, marks Cambridge Hanover as only the third yearling in harness racing history to reach the seven-figure milestone. The sale also set a record for this event, surpassing the $825,000 previously recorded for trotting colt Detour Hanover in 2011.
Trained by Andrew Harris for owner Bill Pollock, Cambridge Hanover is the second foal from the mare Crucial, whose first foal, Maryland, has earned $1.14 million this year. Cambridge Hanover is part of a notable lineage that includes award winners like Venerable and stakes winners like Voguish.
Harris expressed his admiration for the horse's movement and pedigree, stating, “When a horse can move like that, it’s hard to find those kinds.” The excitement extended beyond this sale as another standout, the trotting filly Swinging Loyalty, sold for $760,000—setting a new record for female yearlings at Harrisburg.
The first session of the sale saw a total of 150 horses bring in $16.5 million, averaging $110,387 each. With two more days of selling left, excitement is palpable for what’s to come.
