White Abarrio to Skip Breeders' Cup Classic Title Defense

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. confirmed on Wednesday that White Abarrio will not return in time to defend his title at the Breeders' Cup Classic. The horse, who last raced on June 8, finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Met Mile, will not make the trip to the prestigious event.

"No, he’s not going there," Joseph communicated in a text to Horse Racing Nation, reiterating the sentiments of co-owner Mark Cornett of C2 Racing Stable, who initially shared the news with Thoroughbred Daily News. Cornett explained, "The Breeders’ Cup Classic is not in our plans. We’re focused on getting him a solid race after this layoff."

Looking ahead, Cornett mentioned that White Abarrio may make his next appearance at Gulfstream Park, possibly competing in the Harlan’s Holiday (G3) on December 21 or the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) on January 25.

White Abarrio has yet to race in this current phase with Joseph, his original trainer. He was moved to Rick Dutrow 16 months ago during Joseph's temporary suspension related to the deaths of two horses at Churchill Downs. After being cleared, Joseph welcomed White Abarrio back, who previously secured victories under him in the Holy Bull (G3) and Florida Derby (G1).

Currently, in good health, White Abarrio is set to breeze at Saratoga, either Friday or Monday. Cornett indicated that if all goes well in his comeback race, the team is looking at a full six-year-old campaign leading into a potential stallion career in 2026.
