Woodbine Ensures Optimal Track Conditions as Season Enters Final Stretch

With just four weeks remaining in its 2024 Thoroughbred racing season, Woodbine Entertainment is reaffirming its commitment to equine safety by ensuring its All-Weather Tapeta track is in peak condition for training and competition.

Following the cancellation of two races on November 9 and an entire card on November 10 due to safety concerns, Woodbine undertook comprehensive measures to address track issues and improve conditions:

Key Steps Taken:

1. Immediate Action:

   - After on-track incidents, Woodbine cancelled the last two races on November 9, including the Grade III Autumn Stakes, prioritising equine safety.

   - The next day’s racing card was also cancelled to allow for a thorough assessment and maintenance.

2. Consultation with Experts:

   - Tapeta Footings, the track’s supplier and consultant, was engaged for an in-depth review of the surface.

   - Their assessment indicated a need to restore the track’s evenness, consistency, bounce, and cushion.

3. Extensive Maintenance:

   - The track underwent rototilling to a depth of five inches, followed by power harrowing and gallop master treatment.

   - Morning training hours were extended, incorporating a harrow break procedure to ensure consistent conditions.

4. Feedback and Support:

   - Trainers and riders provided positive feedback after galloping on the restored track.

   - Former Golden Gate Fields Track Superintendent Juan Meza joined the effort, offering additional expertise through Tapeta Footings’ partnership with Woodbine.

5. Ongoing Collaboration:

   - Regular updates were shared with the AGCO, HBPA, and Jockeys’ Guild.

   - Plans are in place for further discussions on maintenance and equine welfare improvements.

Commitment to Safety

Bill Ford, Executive Vice-President of Racing at Woodbine Entertainment, emphasised the organisation's dedication to providing a safe racing environment:

“We’ve worked diligently to ensure the track is in excellent condition for the final weeks of the meet. On behalf of Woodbine and our racing community, I thank Tapeta Footings for their expertise and leadership. The Tapeta surface remains central to our commitment to horse welfare and safety.”

Woodbine’s Safety Record

Since installing the Tapeta track in 2016, Woodbine has consistently ranked among North America’s safest racetracks, underscoring its dedication to equine care.

Live racing at Woodbine resumes on Thursday, November 21, at 4:50 p.m. ET, with the 2024 season concluding on Sunday, December 15.
